A multi-center study in India, published in BMJ Global Health, indicates that even occasional or small amounts of alcohol consumption significantly increase the risk of buccal mucosa cancer in men. The research, involving over 3,700 participants, found all types of alcohol, including local brews, were associated with elevated risk. Experts emphasize there is no safe level of alcohol consumption for cancer prevention and highlight the need for increased awareness, especially given India's high oral cancer rates linked to tobacco and alcohol.
