
Following recent glacial floods and cloudbursts that destroyed modern infrastructure in North Sikkim, ancient Lepcha communities revived traditional cane suspension bridges, known as Ru-Soam. A study by Lepcha scholar Sonam R. Lepcha documents how these bridges, constructed from locally sourced cane and bamboo through collective effort, restored vital access to isolated villages in the Dzongu region. This indigenous technology proved crucial for residents, relief supplies, and emergency movement after conventional routes were severed, showcasing Lepcha resilience and traditional engineering knowledge.
