Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium, a prominent city landmark since 1946, was built on the former bed of Sampangi Kere lake. Historical maps from the 1850s show the area as 'Sumpengy Tank'. This seasonal, rain-fed lake, crucial for local water supply supplemented by wells and temple tanks, dried up in summer, allowing for crop cultivation on its bed. Colonial-era changes in water management and increased sewage led to the lake's transformation.
