In Andhra Pradesh, a 16-year-old girl named Sushma was recently saved from a child marriage by NGO volunteers and government officials. She was married at 15 to a 22-year-old, but intervention ensured she returned to school. Despite the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, child marriages persist in the region, often with tacit approval. NGOs like Vasavya Mahila Mandali, in collaboration with networks like Just Rights for Children, are working to combat this entrenched practice.
