The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognisance of pollution and environmental degradation at Deepor Beel, a Ramsar-listed wetland in Guwahati. Reports from the Central and Assam Pollution Control Boards indicate water contamination exceeding permissible limits, including faecal coliform presence. The Assam State Wetlands Authority's response was deemed insufficient, prompting the NGT to grant four weeks for remedial action and require a fresh status report. Guwahati Municipal Corporation was added as a respondent. Further hearings are scheduled for March 23.
