The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is addressing environmental degradation at Deepor Beel, a Ramsar-listed wetland in Guwahati, following reports of pollution exceeding prescribed water quality norms, including faecal contamination. The NGT's Eastern Zone Bench noted violations by the Assam Pollution Control Board and found the Assam State Wetlands Authority's response inadequate. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation was added as a respondent to tackle urban pollution. The tribunal has granted four weeks for remedial actions and scheduled further hearings for March 23.
