Global Breast Cancer Cases Projected to Rise; India Sees Fivefold Increase Since 1990

A Lancet Oncology study projects global breast cancer cases to rise from 2.3 million in 2023 to over 3.5 million by 2050, with deaths increasing by 44 percent to around 1.4 million annually. India has seen a nearly fivefold rise in cases since 1990, reaching about 203,000 new cases in 2023, alongside a 352 percent increase in deaths. The burden is shifting towards low- and middle-income countries, where late diagnosis and limited care contribute to higher mortality. Rising incidence among younger women and lifestyle changes are notable factors driving this trend.
