Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh's capital with nearly 40 lakh residents, has achieved 100% scientific processing of municipal solid waste under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation operates three waste processing plants, including the newly inaugurated Shivari facility with a 700 metric tonnes daily capacity, enabling the city to process over 2,100 metric tonnes of waste daily. Waste is segregated into organic and inorganic fractions, with organic waste converted into compost and biogas, and inorganic waste recycled or used as fuel, eliminating open dumping and advancing sustainable urban development.
