The Punjab Human Rights Commission (PHRC) intervened to secure the release of a deceased patient's body from a hospital that was withholding it due to unpaid medical dues. The family could not afford the remaining Rs 6 lakh of a Rs 17 lakh bill after their sibling, who worked as a priest, passed away following a liver transplant. The PHRC issued an order stating hospitals cannot retain bodies over financial disputes, setting a precedent against such practices.
