Increasing Role and Challenges of Women in Indian Agriculture and Food Systems

Women constitute a growing share of India's agricultural workforce, rising from 24.8% in 2017 to over 42% in 2023, driven by male migration and structural changes. Despite their increased participation and critical roles in production, processing, and food security, women face systemic challenges including limited land ownership, lack of formal recognition, restricted access to credit and resources, and impacts from land diversion and climate stress. Efforts emphasize empowering women through legal reforms, resource access, and leadership to build resilient, inclusive agri-food systems.
