Mattel Introduces First Autistic Barbie Doll with Sensory-Friendly Features

Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie doll, expanding its diversity-focused Fashionistas collection. Developed with input from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and autistic designer Aarushi Pratap, the doll features sensory-friendly elements like noise-canceling headphones, a fidget spinner, and a tablet with communication symbols. Design choices, such as an averted gaze and articulated limbs, aim to reflect experiences common among some autistic individuals. This release is intended to promote neurodiversity representation and acceptance in toys, allowing children to see themselves reflected in the iconic doll.
