The Uttarakhand government has introduced two schemes to support sheltering stray cattle in rural areas. Under the Gram Gaur Sevak Yojana, individuals sheltering up to five male stray animals receive Rs 80 per animal daily, totaling up to Rs 12,000 monthly, along with free healthcare. The Gaushala Yojana allows sheltering any number of stray cattle with payments at the same daily rate. Currently, six people benefit from the first scheme, and two cow shelters in Munsiyari and Barave house 225 animals.
