The population of the critically endangered Hangul, Jammu and Kashmir's royal stag, has increased to 323 in the March 2025 census, up from 289 in 2023. This growth is attributed to conservation efforts and improved conditions in the Kashmir Valley over the past two decades. The Hangul, the only surviving red deer in the Indian subcontinent, is primarily found in Srinagar's Dachigam National Park. The census data was shared at a Wildlife Board meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
