Mumbai Mayor Seeks Asiatic Lions for Byculla Zoo After 12-Year Gap

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has renewed efforts to bring Asiatic lions to Byculla Zoo after a 12-year gap since the last lion's death in 2014. The zoo had previously proposed exchanging zebras for lions from Junagadh and Indore zoos, but the process stalled due to regulatory and logistical challenges. The BMC has allocated Rs 136 crore in its 2026-27 budget for zoo infrastructure expansion, aiming to enhance facilities and acquire exotic animals. Byculla Zoo currently houses diverse species, including penguins, tigers, and over 150 bird species.
