Research drawing on medieval Marathi literature and oral traditions suggests that savannas in western Maharashtra are ancient, existing for at least 750 years. The study, published in People and Nature, identifies numerous savanna-indicator plant species in historical texts, challenging the view that these landscapes are degraded forests. Scientists advocate for conservation strategies that recognize the historical presence of these open, tree-grass ecosystems and value local culture alongside biodiversity.
