Chennai has established hatcheries for the Olive Ridley turtle nesting season, with the Besant Nagar facility operational and others planned for Neelankarai, Kovalam, and Pulicat. Conservation efforts, including beach patrols and regulating fishing activities, are underway as the nesting season begins. Over 100 turtle carcasses have washed ashore, prompting inter-agency coordination to address violations by trawlers. The Forest Department aims to set up approximately 50 hatcheries this year.
