Iraq is implementing a project to combat increasingly frequent and intense sandstorms, exacerbated by climate change, drought, and deforestation. In a pilot area, laborers are applying a thick layer of clay and planting heat-tolerant seedlings to stabilize soil and reduce dust storms. This initiative, led by UN-Habitat with Iraqi expertise, aims to mitigate the impact of transboundary dust storms and improve visibility on a key highway. Authorities estimate Iraq faces hundreds of storms annually, a number projected to rise without intervention.
