PhD Scholar Dies by Suicide at IIT Kanpur Amid Mental Health Concerns

A 25-year-old PhD scholar, Ramswroop Ishram, died by suicide at IIT Kanpur after jumping from a campus residential building. He had been battling mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, and was under psychiatric care. This marks the second suicide at IIT Kanpur within three weeks and the third in four months. The institute has formed a fact-finding committee and mandated mental health screenings for new students, while expanding counseling services amid concerns over rising student suicides nationally.
