PhonePe has introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments, allowing users to authorize transactions up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition. This method aims to enhance convenience by eliminating the need to remember PINs and improve security through device-specific biometric data stored in the smartphone's Secure Enclave. According to Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, this approach offers a hardware-grade security layer and greater privacy compared to traditional PIN-based authentication.
