IIT Bombay and NTPC have successfully drilled India's first well for testing geological CO2 storage, a significant step in the nation's Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) efforts. Launched in November 2022 under NITI Aayog, the project involves NETRA and IIT Bombay's Department of Earth Sciences. The first well, drilled to 1,200m in Jharkhand, aims to assess storage potential in coal and sandstone formations, with a second well initiated. This field deployment marks a shift from lab research to practical application for CCS development.
