Kolkata Metro Railway has commissioned a 4 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 6.4 MWh Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries along the Blue Line's underground stretch to enhance energy efficiency and passenger safety during power outages. The system can move stranded trains at speeds up to 55 km/h to the nearest station and maintain tunnel ventilation. It is the first microgrid battery system in Indian Railways, designed to reduce carbon footprint and handle power demand spikes, with a lifespan of around 14 years.
