
From March 1, India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will enforce a SIM binding rule requiring messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal to operate only when the registered SIM card is physically present and active in the device. This aims to curb online fraud and enhance cybersecurity by ensuring continuous SIM verification. However, the tech industry body Broadband India Forum has challenged the directive's legality, citing concerns that it exceeds the authority granted by the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The government maintains the rule is necessary for national security and will not be altered.
