TRAI Proposes Simplified Rules for Foreign SIMs in Export-Bound IoT Devices

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed a new, simplified framework for Indian companies to use foreign SIM and eSIM cards in IoT and M2M devices manufactured in India for export. This 'International M2M SIM Service Authorisation' aims to reduce costs and complexity for manufacturers, enhancing global competitiveness. The proposed system features a light-touch, online approval process with a nominal fee, valid for 10 years. TRAI also suggests allowing foreign SIMs for testing in India for up to six months, addressing a regulatory gap for embedded connectivity.
