Researchers at NITK, Surathkal, have developed a machine learning-based landslide early warning system, SVALSA, for the Western Ghats. This integrated framework combines rainfall analysis, real-time soil monitoring, and machine learning to provide more accurate warnings and reduce false alarms. Unlike current rainfall-threshold-based systems, SVALSA accounts for internal slope conditions, addressing the limitations highlighted by recent landslide disasters in the region. The system is currently under patent application.
