WhatsApp is developing a SIM linkage feature for Indian users to comply with new telecom security rules aimed at reducing cyber fraud. The update, currently in beta testing, will require users to have their registered SIM card active in their device for continued app access. While existing chats will remain intact, users may face limited functionality if the SIM is missing or mismatched. This change aligns with the Department of Telecommunications' 2024 guidelines enforcing SIM-based verification for messaging apps in India.
