India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a unique 21-character identification number, called Battery Pack Aadhaar Number (BPAN), for electric vehicle batteries. This initiative aims to ensure end-to-end traceability from raw material extraction to disposal, promoting efficient recycling and sustainability. Producers or importers must assign BPANs, which will store dynamic data on the battery's lifecycle. Changes due to recycling will necessitate a new BPAN. The system seeks to enhance transparency, accountability, and regulatory compliance within the battery ecosystem.
