Google is gradually rolling out a new feature allowing users to change their primary 'gmail.com' email address while retaining all existing account data, including photos, messages, and emails. Users can sign in using either the old or new address. The old address will become an alias. Google advises users to back up data and notes that a new Gmail address cannot be created again for 12 months, though the old one can be reused.
