OpenAI has agreed to purchase up to 750 megawatts of computing power from chipmaker Cerebras in a deal valued at over $10 billion, spanning through 2028. The agreement follows months of negotiations after Cerebras demonstrated that OpenAI's open-source models run more efficiently on its chips than on traditional GPUs. Cerebras will provide cloud services powered by its chips, focusing on inference and reasoning models, and will build or lease data centers for this purpose. This partnership aims to accelerate OpenAI's AI response times and supports Cerebras' efforts to diversify revenue ahead of its planned IPO.
