A new study proposes a 'CRASH Clock' metric to quantify the stress on Earth's orbit due to rapidly increasing satellite numbers. This metric measures the time until a catastrophic collision occurs without avoidance maneuvers. The study highlights that a severe solar storm, like the 1859 Carrington Event, could disable satellite communications for days, with little time to recover from such a disruptive event. Current estimates suggest over 10,000 satellites orbit Earth, posing risks of collisions, debris, and pollution.
