Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit focused on safe artificial general intelligence, has filed a lawsuit alleging the organization abandoned its original mission by forming a for-profit arm and partnering with Microsoft. Musk claims to have contributed over $38 million and stated any legal proceeds will be donated to charity. OpenAI disputes these claims, asserting Musk was aware of and supported the shift toward a for-profit model. A jury trial is scheduled for April 2026 in California.
