New York City's subway system is phasing out its MetroCard, a fare payment system introduced in 1994, by December 31, 2025. The transition fully embraces OMNY, a contactless payment system allowing riders to use credit cards, phones, or smart devices. Over 90% of trips currently utilize OMNY, which was launched in 2019. This move modernizes the transit system, aligning it with other major global cities that already employ similar tap-and-go technologies.
