Soumith Chintala Appointed CTO of Thinking Machines Lab by Mira Murati

Soumith Chintala, an Indian-origin AI researcher and VIT graduate, has been appointed CTO of Thinking Machines Lab, founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Chintala, known for co-creating the PyTorch deep-learning framework during his 11 years at Meta, joined the startup in November 2025 and recently succeeded Barret Zoph as CTO. Despite early academic challenges, he pursued advanced studies at New York University and has contributed significantly to AI research and development.
