In July 2023, Apple CEO Tim Cook and other top tech executives received a classified CIA briefing warning that China could potentially launch a military move on Taiwan by 2027. The briefing, arranged at the request of then Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, highlighted the global reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which produces nearly all advanced chips used by Apple and others. US intelligence officials expressed concern over the economic risks if Taiwan's chip supply were disrupted.
