Pakistan Suspends Geo News for 15 Days Over Muharram Broadcast Content
Pakistan's media regulator, PEMRA, suspended Geo News' broadcast licence for 15 days following a June 26 Muharram programme titled 'Safar-e-Ishq' that aired religious visualisations deemed offensive to religious sentiments and potentially disruptive to public order. Geo News apologized, removed the content from all platforms, and described the broadcast as an editorial error. The regulator cited a failure in editorial caution and ordered an internal inquiry, also referring the case to its Council of Complaints. The suspension highlights ongoing tensions around religious sensitivities and press freedom in Pakistan.
