Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Recovers After Foiling Flydubai Cockpit Attack
Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073, was seriously injured after his Omani co-pilot attacked him with a crash axe mid-flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. Despite a depressed skull fracture, blurred vision, and memory loss, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to restrain the attacker. The aircraft safely landed in Saudi Arabia. Machchhar is recovering steadily in Abu Dhabi, supported by medical teams and praised internationally, including by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US lawmakers.
