
Andre Beteille (1934–2026) was a pioneering Indian sociologist whose work profoundly influenced the study of caste, class, and inequality. Born to a French father and Indian mother, he bridged cultures and helped establish sociology in India, notably at the Delhi School of Economics. His landmark book, Caste, Class and Power, integrated Indian politics with universal theory. Beteille was recognized nationally and internationally, receiving honors like the Padma Bhushan. He remained engaged with students and intellectual debates throughout his career.
